WHAT ASEAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FELLOWSHIP IS ALL ABOUT
The ASEAN Science and Technology (S&T) Fellowship is the successor to the ASEAN-US Science and Technology Fellowship programme that was piloted and launched by the USAID ASEAN-U.S. Partnership for Good Governance, Equitable and Sustainable Development and Security (PROGRESS) program, in partnership with the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology (COST), from 2014 – 2017.
Since 2018, the ASEAN S&T Fellowship is implemented by the ASEAN Foundation with the support of the ASEAN and the U.S. Government through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The programme targets early and mid-career scientists who are citizens and residents of 10 ASEAN Member States (AMS) to contribute their knowledge and analytical skills to empower their national governments. Selected scientists, or fellows, will be embedded in national-level ministries in respective country for one year to encourage policymakers to use more science-based approaches in their policy- and decision-making.
For the 2019/20 ASEAN S&T Fellowship, up to 16 fellows will be chosen from ASEAN region to take part in the 1-year programme by focusing on these three priority areas:
- Digital Economy
- Innovative Start-ups
- Science, Technology and Innovation for United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
The criteria for eligible applicant are as following:
- Minimum master’s degree related to Science and Technology or one of the priority areas listed above
- Citizen of an ASEAN country
- Professional-level fluency in English
- Maximum 45 years of age
Selected fellow will receive a variety of privileges such as monthly stipend (USD 1,200), mentorship from the government, professional development opportunity in a form of leadership and communication training, support to attend conferences and access to a growing network of scientists across the region. At the ASEAN Senior Official Meeting, fellows will have opportunity to view regional policy processes and a chance to network and consult with ASEAN Senior Officials from AMS.
The call for application period of 2019/20 ASEAN S&T Fellowship starts from January 11 to February 24, 2019. The fellows will receive notification about their selection on May 15, 2019 and are expected to attend the annual ASEAN S&T Fellowship Workshop in Jakarta from June 24 – 28, 2019. Afterwards, the fellows will start their 12-month fellowship in each designated host ministry in the first week of July 2019.
