Deputy Chief of Mission Julie Chung traveled to Kampong Speu on October 12, 2016 to visit development projects that are making a big difference for the people of the province.
In Tuol Ampel, Julie inaugurated a new two-story school constructed with the help of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who partnered with a Cambodian construction company, Clover Inc. “Thanks to cooperation between the United States and Cambodia, we are celebrating the opening of a new school that will provide Toul Ampel commune the kind of solid foundation of educational opportunity that every community requires and every child deserves,” she said.
Julie toured nearby Kampong Speu Referral Hospital, which serves 39,000 people annually. The hospital is part of USAID’s Quality Health Service Project, which works to boost reproductive, maternal, newborn, child health, and nutrition services in Cambodia. The Centers for Disease Control has also provided technical support to the hospital’s blood test laboratory.
During the day-long visit, Julie also met with Rath Thavy, provincial coordinator for ADHOC-Cambodia in Kampong Speu to discuss civil society empowerment and human rights.
