Security Alert – Possible Explosive Device During Khmer New Year 2018

Location: Wat Phnom and other areas in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, Cambodia

Event: There have been media reports that an activist group may try to place an explosive device near Wat Phnom in Phnom Penh, or other similar locations in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, Cambodia, during the Khmer New Year holiday from April 12 to April 16, 2018. U.S. government personnel have been advised to exercise caution around Wat Phnom and to be aware of their surroundings in general. The U.S. Embassy will be closed for the holiday on Friday, April 13, and Monday, April 16, 2018.

Actions to take:

  • Exercise caution in areas with large crowds.
  • If you see an unattended object, leave the area immediately.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
