As a proud sponsor of the Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC), the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh is pleased to invite members of the media to attend a community event on Friday, September 11, beginning at 12:30 p.m., at the Olympic Stadium Swimming Pool, Phnom Penh. Members of the CMAC Dive Team – in collaboration with the iCAN British International School and the Golden West Humanitarian Foundation – will conduct a day of water safety and scuba diving activities during a special event that is open to the public. The press is invited to come at any time; pre-registration is not required.
Schedule of Events:
- 12:30-1:30 pm – Swimming demonstration and lessons for children.
- 1:30-4:00 pm – CMAC Dive Team will demonstrate various dive techniques.
The day will begin with an hour of water safety demonstrations and swimming lessons for children of all ages. After the swim lesson, the CMAC Dive Team will showcase their scuba diving skills and attendees will be able to watch the divers through special viewing windows. There will also be a display of dive equipment and after the dives are complete, participants will be allowed to take photos with the CMAC Dive Team and their equipment.
The United States is the largest financial supporter of efforts to clear landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) globally. As part of this commitment, the State Department’s Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs provides training and support to CMAC’s elite dive team. In Cambodia alone, the U.S. State Department has invested more than $65 million in demining and UXO clearance operations over the past 20 years.
